However, athletically ... my life has been consisting of the paddling, running and being in the gym. This evening was no different, after work it was out on the water in the sunshine for a nice 4.5 miles on the river (it had a nice flow on it). Then it was a couple of miles run with a friend, followed by some grunting in the gym. At the end, I was suitably hyper if not a little tired. The buzz I am getting from exercise is just awesome and it just makes you want to do more. I am also very lucky to have some crazy people who join me for different elements of my paddle, run, gym life.
So why am I doing this amount of exercise ... some may ask if I have gone mad! Well it is because I am training for a particular ultra endurance event. It is an event I have completed once before and it seems more people are finding out what I am aiming for. Yep I have DW or Devizes to Westminster in my sights once again. I have been training my K2 partner for a few months now and things are finally coming together. This last weekend, we were out on the Thames and covered 24 miles one day and 26 the next.
It is a very different experience compared with the last time. I am older, my body is well hmm needs treating differently (that is probably the best way to put it) and I need to watch I do not overdo things and stay on the right side of positive and ensure I rest enough. It was only a few years ago where I could manage 30 mins of exercise maximum and now I am pushing my body once again and it is just about keeping going over many hours. I am still more than nervous as to whether it will hold the whole distance but it is a team effort with two of us in the boat. So hopefully we shall keep each other going. I think anyone who is attempting it this year and for all those who have done it before... one of the biggest worries is not letting your partner down in the boat. That is one thing I hope I will not do...
So enough philosophy for one night... so what does one do to celebrate paddling many many miles... well when on the river you spot a cafe called 'The Chocolate Cafe' in Henley, for 4 hours we chatted about the prospect of going there ... so we did and guess what we had. yep cake and Hot Chocolate!
A busy week ahead of me with the 'Meet the Author' evening at the local library tomorrow night. Then a half marathon to run on Sunday in Coventry. Just another normal week .... hmm perhaps not everybodies normal, lol.
